Two teams from Quakertown Community High School captured first and second place at the Bucks County Envirothon on April 29 and advanced to their first state competition in school history.

"I am incredibly proud of both of our Envirothon teams,” said Tina Sullivan, the club’s advisor. “These students worked independently, rotated leadership roles, demonstrated tenacity and a fierce desire to learn which led to them placing first and second in the county. I appreciate their hard work and am excited to see what they do in years to come."

According to the Bucks County Conservation District website, the competition tests students’ knowledge in Soils and Land Use, Aquatic Ecology, Wildlife and Forestry. Tests are developed by professionals from the PA Fish and Boat Commission, PA Game Commission, DCNR – Forestry, and the USDA NRCS.

While Team 1 earned the county’s highest overall score, Team 2 placed first in the county in the Aquatic Ecology section of the test.

“Each year we’ve noticed that Quakertown’s scores keep getting better and better,” said Jason Mauer, the BCCD’s Erosion and Sedimentation Control Technician and Education Specialist. “Historically, Neshaminy has won several competitions but Quakertown has been charging forward. It’s really, really cool to see that progression and watch that program grow.”

A 2005 QCHS graduate, Mr. Mauer commended Mrs. Sullivan and the students for their hard work. “This is college level material that they’re performing,” he said. “It takes a lot of time and effort. They did a great job.”
