Mandarin Students Embark on Unforgettable Cultural Journey to China
By: Jane Wong, QCSD Mandarin Teacher
This summer, a group of Quakertown Senior High School Mandarin students had the incredible opportunity to experience China firsthand during a 10-day educational adventure led by Mandarin teachers Ms. Helena Li and Ms. Jane Wong and chaperoned by Mrs. Lisa Cravener, Mrs. Bethany Fuller, Ms. Brooke Reed, and Mr. Barry Stoneback. The trip was more than just sightseeing—it was a dynamic, immersive journey through China’s rich history, vibrant culture, and everyday life that left students inspired, empowered, and more connected to the language they have studied in class.
Exploring the Wonders of China
The journey began in Beijing, where students stood in awe at some of the world’s most iconic landmarks. They strolled through Tiananmen Square, wandered the ancient halls of the Forbidden City, and scaled the legendary Great Wall of China—a bucket list highlight for many. Students also explored the tranquil Temple of Heaven and the historic Ancient City Wall of Xi’an, and they walked through the enchanting Yu Yuan Garden and along the scenic Bund in Shanghai.
A major highlight of the trip was a visit to the Terracotta Warriors Museum in Xi’an, where students learned about the vast underground army built over 2,000 years ago. These firsthand experiences brought China’s long and fascinating history to life in ways no textbook could replicate.
Hands-On Cultural Immersion
The trip wasn't just about seeing the sites—it was about living the culture. Students engaged in a variety of hands-on experiences that deepened their understanding of Chinese traditions. They participated in a Tai Chi class at the Temple of Heaven, where they learned the slow, meditative movements of the ancient martial art. In a Mandarin conversation class, they practiced real-life communication skills that they later used throughout the trip.
At a local culinary school, students rolled up their sleeves for a Chinese cooking class, crafting delicious dumplings and stir-fried dishes under the guidance of professional chefs. They also visited a jade factory and silk workshop, learning about traditional craftsmanship and industry.
Connecting Through Language and Play
One of the most memorable and heartwarming moments took place at a local ping pong club in Beijing. Our students had the unique chance to play matches and chat with Chinese students. Despite the language barrier, laughter and shared passion for the game created instant friendships. Students proudly used their Mandarin skills to introduce themselves, ask questions, and learn about their peers’ lives in China.
Students also practiced their Mandarin while exploring local markets and residential neighborhoods, purchasing snacks, bargaining with vendors, and engaging in small talk with locals. These real-world exchanges built confidence and showed just how far their language learning had come.
A Program that Builds Global Citizens
This immersive travel experience is part of Quakertown’s commitment to global education and language learning. “Trips like this one give our students not just language practice, but life-changing cultural exposure and global awareness,” said Ms. Wong. “They come back more confident, curious, and connected to the world.”
The Mandarin program at Strayer Middle School and Quakertown Senior High School continues to grow, and this trip is a shining example of its impact. Students return not only with improved language skills but with a deeper appreciation for Chinese culture and the importance of intercultural understanding.
Stay tuned for future travel opportunities—and consider joining the Mandarin program to be part of the next great adventure!
